BY buckhead smile center

Many patients can benefit from orthodontic treatments. These are the ones who have crowded or rotated teeth, misaligned teeth, or those with poor bite relationship between the upper and the lower teeth. If you are one of these people with these conditions, you can get a solution to end your problem, through orthodontic treatments, in order to correct the appearance of your teeth and keep them healthy. Misaligned and crowded teeth can result in many oral health problems because cleaning will become difficult and you will have a higher risk of tooth decay and cavities. Being unable to provide thorough cleaning for your teeth can make bacteria grow and spread where there is any place in your mouth where they can thrive. But you can avoid all of these things from happening when you get your teeth problems addressed by orthodontic treatments.Orthodontics is branch in dentistry that’s dedicated to the diagnosis, prevention and correction of misaligned and crowded teeth and malpositioned jaws. Crooked and overcrowded teeth are a lot difficult to clean because you will not be able to get into the spaces between them to make sure nothing gets stuck in them. This increases your risk of decay and cavities which is why you need to get these addressed by orthodontics. The dentist who specializes in the field of orthodontics is called an orthodontist.

Orthodontics is designed to perform the following solutions for your teeth:

  • Closed wide gaps and spaces between your teeth
  • Straighten crooked or overcrowded teeth
  • Ensure long term health of your teeth and gums
  • Address crowding
  • Improve your self-image as well as your self-esteem
  • Ensuring the alignment of the tips of your teeth
  • Improve or restore natural teeth functions like eating and talking
  • Address an improper bite
  • Treat breathing and swallowing problems

Orthodontic treatments go beyond fixing and restoring the appearance of your teeth to make it straighter and improve your bite. These also help improve the quality of your life because you will have a positive image of yourself, your self-confidence will improve and you will feel good about the fact that you enjoy a beautiful smile. Orthodontic treatments also help reduce your risk of potential health problems related to the improper positioning of your teeth and jaw including cavities, tooth decay, gum diseases and tooth loss. It is important to address orthodontic problems before they even result in worse and more complicated problems such as difficulty in chewing and digestion, speech impairment and the abnormal look of the surfaces of your tooth.

Orthodontics offers a wide range of dental solutions and some of them are the following:

  • Invisalign is a set of clear aligners that is designed to straighten your teeth. These aligners are made of thermoplastic material that you wear over your teeth as it moves and shifts your teeth to their proper position. These aligners do not use metal brackets nor wires in order to correct the position of your teeth.
  • Traditional braces. Braces is the most commonly used dental solution when it comes to treating crowded or misaligned teeth. Braces are made up of bands, wires, metal brackets and rubber. Bands are fixed around the tooth normally around the molars, to act as an anchor for the appliance. The arch wires pass through the metal brackets that are attached to each of your tooth. The ends of these wires are attached to the bands. In order to gradually shift your teeth, the tension on the arch wires are being adjusted and tightened by the orthodontist on a monthly basis. After a couple of months or a few years, you can already enjoy a straighter teeth and a brand new smile.
  • Lingual braces. Lingual braces are also called invisible braces because they are placed in the interior of the teeth. These are ideal for those people who do not want to wear metal brackets and wires on their teeth. Just like the traditional braces, lingual braces also use gentle pressure to be able to gradually shift and correct your teeth’s position.
  • Retainers are used, usually after a patient is done with braces, so as to prevent the movement of the teeth and to hold them in place.
